Food Vendors Expression of Interest

Food Vendors Expression of Interest

Greater Whitsunday Food Network (GWFN) are calling for Expression of Interest to be submitted for value add food vendors at the Wednesday Farmers' Market and also the River Street Twilight Market. Both market spaces provide an opportunity to highlight local food production and to engage the community in seasonal food experiences. There are restrictions on the number of vendors at the Wednesday Farmers’ Market and guidelines around using local produce for both market spaces.

When completely your Expression of Interest we encourage all to look at how you might value add local produce within your menu options as it not only shows you are passionate about supporting local farmers, are seasonally creative but also highlights the food grown locally in our Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday region. By creating a niche product for customers to love you will also be supporting the growth of our local food system and local economy. We can assist our food operators in seeking out the freshest seasonal produce from local farmers and adapting their menus to highlight both farmer and produce.

Our weekly Wednesday Farmers’ Market attracts regular customers who are dedicated to supporting local farmers, those who are aware of the health benefits of eating fresh produce and know where it comes from or how it was grown. It is also a space to showcase to those visiting our region who travel using the Australian Farmers’ Market Association guide to authentic farmers’ markets. Our Wednesday Farmers’ Market operates every week 7am to 11am providing a fantastic opportunity for local workers to visit before work or school for fresh local produce shopping and being time poor they can grab some breakfast or a delicious smoothie made using fresh local produce. Mums and toddlers or seniors can all visit the market in the cooler part of the day to shop and will enjoy some treats to eat whilst relaxing on the deck near our market space or under one of the big trees. Come winter in our peak season, parents love relaxing in sun after they have finished their produce shopping and enjoy a warm drink whilst their little ones run around on the grassed areas.

Our River Street Twilight Market has a section known as River Street Eats, this space is dedicated to supporting, highlighting and growing our food region, to both locals and visitors to our area. All value add food vendors must highlight on their menus both farmer and the produce they have used. We encourage our food vendors to push the boundaries and create new exciting options. This market space is all about the local food experience and is inclusive of local businesses or artists who focus on organic, natural, health and wellbeing. It is a community event attracting visitors of all demographics not only from Mackay but also visitors to our region.

Be the first to step up and say "love your local farmer".

Please note that the Value Add Food Vendor positions are different to stallholders who have baked or created artisanal products using local ingredients. A food vendor creates the product mostly onsite and sells on site to be eaten onsite. Whereas a stallholder who has baked or created artisanal goodies has done so using local grown ingredients and are sold to be take home to enjoy. This type of stallholder has a different set of guidelines for us to ensure they meet a requirement that recipes are based on value adding local grown produce. Later this year w e will be holding a Stallholder & Food Movement Workshop for those interest in learning about setting up a market stall food business, value adding, first time stallholders, how to become accredited for the Local Produce Guarantee and GWFN Guidelines for Markets and Memberships. Please check future newsletters for details on the workshop.

For now, if you would like to join as a value add food vendor please take a look at the attached Expression of Interest Form to learn more. Expressions of Interest for 2019 close at 5pm on 15th March 2019.

[value add means taking a raw local grown product/produce and creating another viable product to eat or use]
